How Should We Teach Kids Units of Measurement

A standard unit of measurement provides a reference point by which objects of weight, length, or capacity can be described. Although measurement is an important part of everyday life, kids dont automatically understand that there are many different ways to measure things. Standard vs Nonstandard Units A standard unit of measurement is a quantifiable language  that helps everyone understand the association of the object with the measurement. It is expressed in inches, feet, and pounds, in the United States, and centimeters, meters, and kilograms in the metric system. Volume is measured in ounces, cups, pints, quarts, and gallons in the U.S. and milliliters and liters in the metric system. In contrast, a nonstandard unit of measurement is something that may vary in length or weight. For instance, marbles are not reliable for finding out how heavy something is because each marble will weigh differently than the others. Likewise, a human foot cannot be used for measuring length because everyones foot is a different size. Standard Units and Young Children Young children might understand that the words â€Å"weight,† â€Å"height,† and â€Å"volume† are associated with measuring. It will take a while to understand that in order to compare and contrast objects  or to build to scale, everybody needs the same starting point. To begin, consider explaining to your child why a standard unit of measurement is necessary. For example, your child likely understands that he or she has a name, as do relatives, friends, and pets. Their names help identify who they are and show that they are a person. When describing a person, using identifiers, such as blue eyes, helps to specify the attributes of the person. Objects also have a name. Further identification and description of the object can be achieved through measurement units. The long table, for instance, may describe a table of some length, but it doesnt say how long the table actually is. The five-foot table is far more accurate. However, this is something that children will learn as they grow. A Nonstandard Measurement Experiment You can use two objects at home to demonstrate this concept: a table and a book. Both you and your child can participate in this measurement experiment.   Holding your hand rigid, measure the length of the table in hand spans. How many of your hand spans does it take to cover the length of the table? How many of your childs hand spans? Now, measure the length of the book in hand spans. Your child may notice that the number of hand spans required to measure the objects is different than the number of hand spans  it took for you to measure the objects. This is because your hands are different sizes, so you are not using a standard unit of measurement.   For your child’s purposes, measuring length and height in paper clips or hand spans, or using pennies in a homemade balance scale, may work well, but these are nonstandard measurements. A Standard Measurement Experiment Once your child understands that hand spans are nonstandard measurements, introduce the importance of a standard unit of measurement. You might, for instance, show your child to a one-foot ruler. At first, dont worry about the vocabulary or smaller measurements on the ruler, just the concept that this stick measures one foot.  Tell them that people they know (grandparents, teachers, etc.) can use a stick just like it to measure things in the exact same way. Let your child measure the table again. How many feet is it? Does it change when you measure it rather than your child? Explain that it doesnt matter who measures, everyone will get the same result. Move around your home and measure similar objects, such as the television, sofa, or bed. Next, help your child measure their own height, yours, and each member of your family. These familiar objects will help put into perspective the relationship between the ruler and the length or height of objects.   Concepts like weight and volume can come later and are not quite as easy to introduce to young children. However, the ruler is a tangible object that can easily be transported and used to measure larger objects around you. Many kids even come to see it as a fun game.

Philosophy of Education What is my philosophy of education? For hours I have tried to decide what exactly that is. However after much thought I have not been able to come up with an exact answer. After much consideration I have decided that I have no real philosophy but I have goals that one day I will achieve. Although the goals sound simple I know that they will be difficult to attain. I have almost always wanted to teach. I grew up in a single parent household and my mother was an elementary school teacher. Poetry Essay June 16 Example For Students

Poetry Essay June 16 The poem is a free verse there is no punctuation; it describes the anxious thoughts of a teenaged boy who does not know what tomorrow will hold. The title of the poem includes the words June 16th. This date is a very significant date in the history of South Africa, as Youth day is commemorated and celebrated on this day. It goes back to the time in South African during the Apartheid regime. On June 16th 1976 thousands of students marched in the streets of Sweet to protest against Bantu education, which limited the level of education to most South Africans. There was an angry youth crowd fighting against and angry government and this resulted in the police killing two hundred young people and injuring hundreds more. This poem is therefore a good poem as it reflects how the people felt during this time in history and it also reflect where we come from as a nation and how the youth can play such n important role in changing an entire history of a country. Critical analysis on the poem: A young mans thoughts before June the 16th, by Faze Johannes. To me A young mans thoughts before June the 16th, written by Faze Johannes is quite a good poem. I must admit I had to read it quite a few times before I started to understand it. Although it is a short poem, the style is simple and the writer gets straight to the point. I understand that the poem is about a young man who is about to go and fight for his rights in South Africa, but I feel that he would rather be somewhere else. I like the poem, it is not difficult to read and you can feel the emotions of the young boy through the words written in the poem. He is anxious about what tomorrow will bring and Just wants to be a normal young person. He longs for his mother and wants to spend time with his friends and he knows that he will probably die. In this poem, Faze Johannes is placing himself in somebody elses shoes (this person knowing that he was going to die as a result of the march of June the 16th). Therefore he is not the narrator of the poem but rather a character which will result in his death. The poet uses words like l, me and my which make the poem very personal and you can imagine the young man going through all the emotions that he is going through. The poem can be seen both as literally and figuratively therefore making the reader or narrator enjoy how the poem has been described. In the literal sense, the person in the poem is going to march, travel on a road (line 1) on June the 16th. There is a use of alliteration which occurs by the use of the phrase broad belch of beer (line 7). However figuratively, the march is the journey, the struggle, against apartheid for a better tomorrow. The speaker slows the poem down when reading it because of the repeated alliterations, this make the poem full of sadness. In the last line the poet writes that his sunset is drenched with red. This symbolizes that there is going to be a lot of lives lost and their blood will be spilled all over the place. The poet uses a lot of literary devices in the poem: Firstly the whole poem is written in small letters. This shows that the person in the poem feels inferior and does not think highly of himself. Also there are no punctuation marks used in the poem, the lines Just go on and on. This emphasizes the fact the is in an on-going struggle that Just goes on and on. His thoughts, his sweet memories of (his) youth are unstoppable.

Technology And Television: Child Obesity Technology and Television: Child Obesity The children of today are becoming more obese, for the fact that they are obtaining laziness. They are spending more time in front of the television then they are getting their daily exercise. Their growing bodies need exercise to lose baby fat before it gets to be a serious problem. The growth of technology has formed a major impact on the obesity of today's children. This technology has substituted normal childhood play exercises with computer games that take less physical effort. Because of technology in today's society the problem with child obesity has become tremendously intensified. First, what is child obesity? The term child obesity means a ?child is a person between birth and puberty and obese is extremely fat: corpulent?(The American Heritage Dictionary 265,856). This disease is caused due to a lack of exercise and over-eating by a child. Child obesity can cause many medical problems for a child that suffers from such a disease. Obesty is a widespread disease that is growing incredibly worse as technology increases. Furthermore, it is obvious that the lack of exercise has a major part to do with child obesity; scientists blame the television for a substitute to outdoor sports. Kids are spending more time watch television than they are doing physical activities. ?The findings strongly support the notion that the most important lifestyle factor in childhood obesity is television watching?(Monmaney). The television brings the child's imagination to life, giving them entertainment to do without the running and exercising of outdoor sports. The more television a child watches the more obese the child will get. Next, the problem is getting so out of hand that the government is going to have to start getting involved. Satcher and Shirley Watkins, the undersecretary of agriculture for food, nutrition and consumer services said that, 'TV increases obesity, stifles creativity and shortens attention spans among young people' (Bauder). This is their reason for joining the campaign for a TV-Free America. It is estimated that an obese child watches an average of four hours and nine minutes of television each day. That is four hours that a child could be bonding with their family or taking action in some physical activity. Thus, problem with child obesity starts as young as infancy. If the child's parents do not stress exercise the child will find an alternative way to occupy their time. For example, playing a game cartridge rather than shooting hoops or flying a kite. The game cartridge provides cheap entertainment with very little fitness involved. Ross Andersen recommends that parents find alternatives to watching television for their children (Joseph). A parent should do anything possible to get their kids away from the television. Ether by making daily plans with timed intervals limiting the amount of television the child can watch or signing them up for YMCA sport activities. Even if the parent has a busy work schedule, make time to benefit the child. Although, there are numerous amounts of prescription drugs for child obesity, the side affects are too risky for the younger child. The easiest way to solve this well-known disease is by stopping the problem before it starts. ?'If you can intervene with overweight children before they are fully grown, you can often help them grow into their weight and prevent them from becoming overweight adults. Some overweight children don't need to lose weight as much as they need to gain weight at a slower rate.'? (Discroll) Moving on, some children do not need to lose weight, but need help growing into the weight they already have. They can use help to slow the rate at which they gain weight, making it easier for them to grow into it. Plus, the health risk faced by children with the disease of child obesity is immense. ?More than 70 percent of all cases persist into adulthood?(Mellin). Obesity during adult years is associated with increased rates of diseases such as hyperinsulinemia, coronary heart disease, angina, atherosclerosis, various cancers, orthopedic problems, and gout along with many other short-term and psychosocial consequences of obesity in children. Followed by the challenger, Reliance Retail has a share of 28%. This shows that there is a tight competition within the four companies. The Indian and US retail industries are having almost same nature of competition. The chart shows that none of them is having more than 50% of the market share. The market leader is Tesco with 37% market share followed by Sainsbury and Walmart with 19% each. Morrisons is only 4% behind the two companies which shows that there is a strong competition between all the retailers in UK. The research initially started with the collection of data about the Indian retail industry as a whole, and then moved onto global scenario of retail industries.Also, issues regarding the foreign direct investment(FDI) in the retail sector is covered. The key players currently operating in the retail industry and the bottlenecks that the retail industry is facing in India are also analysed. Based on the findings, the future outlook of the Indian retail industry is mentioned in the report. 4. 1. Major Findings 1) The Retail sector in India is split up into two, the organised and the unorganised. 2) In terms of value the size of the retail sector in India is $350 billion. The organised sector contributes about 5%of the total trade. ) The retail sector in India contributes 10% to the Gross Domestic Product and 8% to the employment of the country. 4) In terms of growth the FMCG retail sector is the fastest growing unit. 5) The foreign retail giants were initially restricted from making investments in India. But now FDI is permitted 51% for multi brand retailing and 100%for single brand retailing. Again they can enter the markets through franchises. The report concludes that, retail industry in India has a very bright future prospect as it is undergoing through a transaction phase.It is expected to enrich the Indian economy in terms of Income and employment. The retail industry in India has come forth as one of the major dynamic and fast paced industries with several players entering the market. From analysis & other reports and surveys it is quite clear that Indian retail players are now all set and ready to triumph over the organised retail sector.
